The Dufatanye Organization (DO) is a Christ-centered, non-government organization (NGO) that reaches out to victims of the genocide, AIDS, and extreme poverty in Rwanda. Many suffer from PTSD, but they now experience a sense of belonging by living in this community which surrounds a farm of ten hectares and provides a safe, Christ-centered haven to its members.
The DO empowers this community, including other vulnerable ones nearby, by cultivating a spirit of respect and reconciliation among those who formerly eyed one another with terrific enmity. The term, dufatanye, means to “join together.” Using a variety of different activities, individuals are trained to become responsible neighbors who join together to “be the presence of Christ to one another and to see the person of Christ in one another.”
Participants grow through attending Bible and health education classes; receiving assistance with medical challenges; learning organic agricultural practices; cultivating a banana plantation; servicing a fish hatchery and fifteen fish farms; caring for small and large animals; constructing homes for widows and orphans; and by establishing micro-finance projects such as basket-weaving, brick-making, and crafting jewelry and toys. |
Presently, over five hundred children now participate in our Saturday Bible and Breakfast Club! We have also started ministering to five of the most vulnerable communities in the forest and bush within an hour’s drive from the DO. We call them “Villages of Hope” and are supporting them by leading Bible studies; planting an assortment of fruit trees; donating one thousand chickens; providing water filters/buckets; and cultivating gardens near their homes and schools. The Power of Play, from Canada, has constructed five school playgrounds in each village, and this has unexpectedly inspired delinquent pupils to regularly attend classes!

It is difficult for most of us to imagine a life without hope. But those who are orphans and widows with no one to provide for them, those who have AIDS, and the very poor often don’t know how to make it. The Dufatanye Co-operative Farm in Rwanda was founded to give people hope by working together, finding faith in Christ, and learning to provide for themselves. More than fifty families, and hundreds of children, are part of this community of hope and learning.
Dufatanye Co-operative Farm
God designed us to live in community. When we live in isolation we do not have the strength that comes from working together. The Dufatanye Co-operative Farm is a community of people who are working together, seeking a life of productivity and dignity. The farm provides a means of self-support through growing food that can be eaten, and any surplus sold. A savings program has allowed many in the community to begin to build a savings fund.
LOVING ONE ANOTHER
Jesus taught us: “love your neighbor as you love yourself.” If a member of the Dufatanye community does not have a home to live in, the community has been known to join together to make bricks and build a house for a them. After completing the house, the community comes together to have a celebration and house warming party. Members of the community are taught to love one another as Christ has loved us and gave himself for us.
The abundance of the earth
God created the first man and woman, and put them in a garden. He told them to tend its produce and enjoy its food. Members of the Dufatanye community are given tools so they can work together to till the land and tend the farm. This helps build community, and God often blesses this spirit of unity and hard work with abundance. Diligence, prayer, seeking the Lord in worship and the Scriptures makes for a family of gladness.
